STOCKPORT WIN IROQUOIS CUP
STOCKPORT have started their season in the best possible
fashion - by winning the Iroquois Cup, a competition they
have not won since 1999.
And coach Sean Ring believes Saturday's success could be the
catalyst for more even honours this season.
The Beech Road boys battled back from 3-1 behind at the Carshalton
Road ground to defeat Purley, the southern champions, 11-8
to clinch their first honours of the new campaign.
Thomas Gosnay, the England Under-19 attacker, led the way
with a hat-trick of goals, while Chris Bland (2), Paul Fullerton
(2), Dave Bryant (2), Paul Morris and Charlie Cox were all
on target.
"It was fine performance and we were made to work hard,"
admitted Ring, whose side won the Daily Telegraph Senior Flags
last season.
"We were slow getting out of the blocks, but we showed
a lot of character and played well. Its nice to win some silverware
so early in the season."
Stockport will now look to defend the Cheshire Sixes this
weekend at Wilmslow Lacrosse Club, another curtain-raiser
to the start of the North of England League on Saturday 2
October, followed by a mouth-watering clash with Heaton Mersey,
the league champions, on Sunday in the Referee Trophy final.
"We are looking to defend our Cheshire Sixes title, and
then we've got a tough match against Mersey the day after,"
added Ring.
"We want to see if we can win some more honours before
the league season starts."
- Mellor have also won honours this season, after they defeated
Brooklands Hulmeians 3-1 to win the Bath Eights Tournament
at the Recreation Ground, Bath.
