Greenwood believes perseverance is the key
MANCHESTER Waconians manager Phil Greenwood could not hide
his disappointment after his team failed to give Heaton Mersey,
the defending champions, a run for their money in the North
of England League Premier Division at the weekend.
Wacs were beaten 12-8 at Wilmslow Road and trailed 3-1, 5-3
and 8-4. Greenwood was adamant his team should have done better.
"I'm quite disappointed," admitted Greenwood. "We
made the score look respectable, but we didn't play as well
as I know we can."
Midfielder Tom Caplin top-scored for Wacs with four goals,
while Nick More (2), skipper Steve Shanahan and Tom Gallon
were also on target for the South Manchester boys.
Greenwood paid special praise to Gallon, the 20-year-old midfielder,
who equipped himself well in the face-off against Mersey's
Stephen Grace, the England international.
"We keep knocking at the door and it's about time our
luck changed," added Greenwood, who is desperate for
his team to break into the top 4 in the league.
"Perseverance is the key. Our mindset has changed, but
Mersey are still the only top 4 team that we have not turned
over. Perhaps we let ourselves down a little bit.
"We saw the Mersey game as a big opportunity to get a
win and we are still aspiring to get results out of every
game this season. Beating Mersey would have been nice, though."
Wacs visit Rochdale this Saturday in a game Greenwood is confident
his team should win.
"It's a fixture we are looking to win," said Greenwood.
"Every point is valuable - and we'll try and grab as
many as we can."
- Manchester Waconians A team are second in Division 2 following
their 8-5 victory away to Heaton Mersey A, while Wacs' B team
triumphed 12-4 at home to Ashton-under-Lyne A in Division
4 to stay second in the table, trailing only on goal difference
to Sheffield Steelers A.
Wacs C conceded their Division 5 fixture with Heaton Mersey
B after failing to raise a team.
