Steelers edge another victory, while students move off bottom
By Neil Goulding
SHEFFIELD Steelers moved up to fourth place in the North
of England League Division 2 following a hard-fought victory
at home to Rochdale A.
The South Yorkshire side eventually ran out 3-2 winners having
fielded a weakened side against their Lancashire opponents.
Ben Lyon scored twice and Tom Warwick was also on the scoresheet
as the Steelers led 1-0, 2-0 and 2-1.
"I don't think I've played in a game that was won 3-2
before," admitted Steelers' spokesman Paul Coups.
"I've played in a game that we won 4-2, but at this
stage in the season, and ahead of our Junior Flags final,
it's important we just keep winning.
"It's a tricky time in the season with players missing
but have just got to get on and play."
Sheffield University moved off the bottom of the table for
the first time in over a month courtesy of an 11-5 win at
home to Brooklands Hulmeians A .
Skipper Richard Wilson, the England attacker, led from the
front with four goals as the South Yorkshire students never
looked back having drawn the first quarter 2-2.
Dave Sen (2), Dave Alcock (2), Rob Nugent, Tom Marsh and
Robert Dinsmore were also on the mark for the home side who
led 5-4 at half-time and extended their advantage to 8-4 by
the end of the third quarter.
"It was hard fought victory but which was well deserved,"
said Wilson.
"Brooklands' goalkeeper played extremely well and if
it wasn't for him, we could have won by a lot more.
"The key to our success was the midfield, who worked
their socks off in the middle of the park and never gave up."
