Stockport secure Autumn Under-19 Floodlit League
TWO late goals from Thomas Gosnay secured Stockport the Autumn
Under-19 Floodlit League Conference A final against Timperley
for a history-making third successive year. The England Under-19
attacker was the hero with an important double which saw the
Beech Road recover from 2-1 behind to triumph 3-2. Stockport
led 1-0 for over three quarters of the match but Gosnay's
efforts proved the difference in a tense finale which went
the distance.
Danny Dignan opened the scoring for the defending champions
but Timperley battled hard and deserved to take the lead.
But goals from Tim Holdsworth, another promising England international,
and an well-taken effort from Chris Stokes made sure Stockport
had to work hard to reclaim their crown.
"It was nice to win the title for a third year, but
we made hard work of it," admitted Simon Rowlinson, the
Stockport coach. "All credit to Timperley, particularly
their goalkeeper who made some great saves, but we knew we
could grind them down. "We made sure we didn't panic
but our major problem was that we were not working off the
ball. We are looking forward to the Norman Barber Knockout
competition. "It would be great if we can win a treble
again - we are nearly there having already won the double."
Stockport swept the board last year when they won all Under-19
competitions after a series of sparkling performances. If
they achieve the feat again this season the club rightly deserve
their place in the record books.
