Sheffield Steelers Show Class

Sheffield Steelers showed their class to book a place in the quarter-finals of the Junior Flags with a crushing 18-3 victory against Brooklands Hulmeians A. Mark Coups' team were just too hot to handle and courtesy of five goals each from Martin Garner and Sam Noble, the visitors were put to the sword early in the match. American ace Alan Kurpwieski weighed in with four goals and Gavin Culmer (2), Ben Lyons and Coups were also on the scoresheet as the home team led from the word go.

"We were brilliant," beamed Coups, whose side led 5-0, 10-0 and 13-1. "They were lucky to get three goals, we were a different class. We played Brooklands in the league three weeks ago and beat them 18-1, so we always expected to win. We've got to play Heaton Mersey in the quarter-finals and that's a game we are really looking forward too. We fancy our chances against Mersey and we reached the semi-finals last year, so if we win then we stand a good chance of progressing. It's always nice to have a good cup run."

Sheffield University produced a battling performance at home to Cheadle A, also in Division, but their efforts were in vain as they slipped to an 11-5 defeat. John Hammond, Tom Sen, Dave Sen, Tom Marsh and Robert Nugent were all on target fore the South Yorkshire students but Cheadle were just too strong as they led throughout 4-1, 9-2 and 10-3 respectively.

"I feel we deserved more out of the game especially after our second half display that kept Cheadle down to only two goals," admitted Richard Wilson, the Sheffield skipper. "But scoring is still our problem at the moment and can't expect to win only scoring five goals. Relegation is a bit of a worry, but we are all positive that we can get out of trouble. Since the new year we have gained a few extra players, so hopefully with their presence along with the return from injury of Rob Dinsmore we hope to start picking up more wins"

Sheffield Steelers' Under-19 team showed their class in the Norman Barber Northern Knockout Cup at Timperley with a 11-9 triumph over Heaton Mersey. Sheffield will meet Cheadle in the quarter-finals, due to be played this Sunday (25 Jan).
