Teams Points reinstated
BOARDMAN & Eccles have been boosted by the news that
all three of their teams will be reinstated with two points
which they were docked earlier this season by the North of
England League committee for breaching a long-standing bye-law.
The Welbeck Road club, who have three teams which play in
the North of England League, lodged an appeal to the NOE League
committee because they felt the penalty they received for
'not replying to official correspondence' was unwarranted.
It was great relief for the Manchester outfit when the League
committee were sympathetic to Boardman's appeal and upheld
it.
"It's great that all of our teams have got their points
back," said Ian Davidson, the Boardman secretary. "We
are just glad that the league were sympathetic to our appeal
and that the matter is sorted out."
Indeed, a view shared by Nick Anderton, the Boardman skipper,
who added: "I'm really happy we've got our points back,
especially for the A team because for them losing two points
could have meant the difference between staying up and relegation.
"Our appeal was based on a number of sensitive personal
issues and we always felt that we had not done anything wrong."
But Anderton wasn't happy with the first team's performance
against Mellor, the 2001-2002 league winners, in the quarter
finals of the Daily Telegraph Senior Flags at the weekend.
Boardman were beaten 19-9, but the match swung in Mellor's
favour after they managed to get the home side's ace American
attacker, Eric Perez, banished to the sidelines with a six-minute
penalty for not having the right size head on his stick.
The move infuriated Anderton, for Perez had drawn the scores
level at 2-2 with an excellent goal, only to see it be disallowed
and from then on Mellor fought their way back in the contest.
Perez still managed to score four goals for his side, but
his efforts proved in vain.
"Eric's dismissal real didn't help us," admitted
Anderton. "Once he went off, Mellor came back at us.
We conceded too many penalties and at one stage we had three
players off the pitch because of penalties. That didn't help
our cause."
