Mersey stunned by Cheadle
HEATON Mersey, the defending champions, have all but relinquished
their chances of retaining the Men's North of England League
Premier Division title.
Mersey have now dropped eight points at the half-way stage
in the domestic calendar, and Saturday's defeat at the hands
of Cheadle has left the Lancashire club facing a mountain
to climb.
Mersey led 4-0 and 6-3 against the former double winners
and their fellow title contenders, but Cheadle fought back
in an inspired third quarter and then went on to clinch the
match 12-9 to keep on course to challenge for honours with
Mellor and Stockport.
Daren Baythorpe was the hero for Cheadle with six goals,
while England international Dave Carman netted a hat-trick.
Phil Lynch (2) and Paul Flowers, the England midfielder,
completed the scoring for the Kingsway Sports Club outfit.
Stockport are still three points clear after winning a close
encounter with Manchester Waconians 10-9.
Wacs led 3-2, 6-5 and 8-7, but their Beech Road opponents
won the last quarter 3-1 to clinch victory.
Mellor had Andy Pelletier, their American attacker, to thank
for a comfortable 23-2 victory at home to struggling Rochdale.
Pelletier, who has been a revelation since his arrival from
the United States, top scored with eight goals, while promising
England midfielder Sam Davidson weighed in with six goals.
Daniel Hodgson, James Mearns, Andy Etherington and Alistair
Wallace also scored braces, while Dave Vickers was on the
score sheet.
Timperley made sure Wilmslow are having a miserable time,
thumping the Style Road club 18-11 to leave them rooted at
the foot of the table.
Rob Macklin led the charge with seven goals, while John Hammond
scored six, with the rest spread between Tim Holdsworth (2),
John Macklin, Lee Warburton and Will Sandy.
Chris Mountney replied with five goals for Wilmslow and Dan
Green (2), John Mountney, captain James Perrin, Ashley Tarran-Jones
and Robert Messenger were also on the mark, but the Cheshire
club are looking ominously placed for a drop in divisions
if they don't find a change of fortune soon.
Paul Simpson was the hero for Brooklands Hulmeians as they
ran out 15-7 victors at home to Boardman & Eccles. The
attacker scored eight times, while Chris Brown replied with
a hat-trick for Boardman.
