Cheadle win first title of the new season
CHEADLE, winners of four trophies last season, made sure
of their first title this year with a superb 16-10 victory
over Mellor in the Referee's Trophy final at Wilmslow Lacrosse
club yesterday (Sunday).
It was a disciplined display from Brian Costello's side,
who were always in control and led 10-5 at the interval. Five
goals for England Under-19 attacker Gareth Wilkinson and a
hat-trick from Phil Lynch, the former England frontman, gave
the Kingsway Sports Club side the impetuous they needed to
get the better of their arch-rivals.
"We knew Mellor would give us a tough game," admitted
Costello, "but our fitness showed and we were always
in control of the game. "Mellor always play an attacking
game, but we thought their defence was vulnerable and that
showed with the goals we scored. "I think some of our
defence wasn't too great and at other times really good, but
we did have our fair share of basic errors. "However,
I was pleased with the way performed, especially Gareth Wilkinson
in attack and Adrian Bennett, who also had a good match."
But despite their first honours this term Cheadle were still
left a little red-faced after their shock decision not to
defend the Cheshire Sixes title a day earlier. Not that it
bothered Stockport though as they triumphed 11-3 over Poynton
to win the title, their second in four years. Dave Bryant
and Owen Jones led the charge with four goals each as the
Beech Road boys never looked back having led 6-0 at half-time.
Wilmslow, hosts of the tournament, also tasted success with
their B-team winning the Plate final 3-2 against Old Stopfordians.
This weekend will see the start of the North of England League
programme for all Premier Division and Division One matches.
All games start at 2.00pm, while Division 3-5 fixtures begin
next weekend (September 27th).
