Lacrosse News Update November 3
RYAN Bevington, the Cheadle defender, was rushed to hospital
after suffering a nasty head wound in his side's showdown
with Brooklands Hulmeians. Bevington, an experienced England
international, received stitches for the injury at Wythenshawe
Hospital, but later emerged a little worse for ware to savour
his team's 17-6 victory as well as the club's annual Bonfire
Night celebrations. Gareth Wilkinson, the England Under-19
attacker, was the star of the show for last year's double-winners
with four goals, while captain Daren Baythorpe and Phil Lynch
both scored important hat-tricks.
Brooklands mounted a spirited fightback in the third quarter,
which they won 5-0, but Cheadle replied with power in the
final 20 minutes, scoring nine goals without reply. Paul Flowers
(2), Mike Holdsworth (2), Andrew Beard (2) and Joey Bartram
added the rest for the Kingsway Sports Club outfit. Promising
teenager Chris Brady also shone as a late replacement for
the injured Dave Carman, who was nursing a dislocated toe.
"Chris came in and did a great job," said Flowers,
the Cheadle vice-captain, "but overall it was a very
solid performance. The next four weeks should prove where
we are in relation to winning the title again because we've
got to play some of the big teams."
Indeed, and fellow title-chasers Stockport, who Cheadle meet
next weekend, don't look like giving the champions an easy
ride.
The Beech Road boy were in sparkling form against Rochdale
on Saturday and it was little surprise when they ran 20-11
winners against their bottom of the table opponents, having
led 6-2, 11-6 and 16-8. Midfielder Dave Bryant led the charge
with five goals, while hat-tricks from Owen Jones, Chris Bland
and Thomas Gosnay, and further goals from Paul Fullerton (2),
Keith Gosnay (2) and Steve Talbot compounded the damage. Chaz
Bulera replied with six goals for the Lancashire club, but
it was little consolation for a side who have still yet to
win this season.
Heaton Mersey, the 2001 Daily Telegraph Senior Flags Trophy
winners, continue to top the table after a hard-fought 10-6
triumph at home to Boardman & Eccles. Summer signing Matt
Beadle (3), James Gallagher (2), Sam Dunwoody (2), John Beadle,
Andy Ellison and Thomas Gallagher scored the winning goals
as Mersey led 2-0, 5-2 and 7-4 respectively.
Strugglers Timperley received a welcome boost at they hammered
Wilmslow 21-12 at Styal Road. Australian international midfielder
Ryan Garnsworthy, who signed for the Stockport Road club in
midweek, scored three on his debut, while Billy Beaumont (5),
John Hammond (4) and James Shuttleworth (3) did the remainder
of the damage.
