Cheadle need something special to retain title
Cheadle, last-year's treble-winners, realise that it will
take something special if they are to retain the domestic
title they won so easily last season. But the Kingsway Sports
Club side still have plenty of pride to play for in the North
of England League Premier Division after a series of shock
defeats. And a 12-10 victory over high-fliers Timperley at
the weekend was the perfect tonic for the champions who are
now firmly focused on success in the Daily Telegraph Senior
Flags Trophy, their only other means of silverware this term.
"It was a decent team performance for a change,"
admitted Jeff Condron, the Cheadle coach. "Timperley
are not a side you can take lightly, especially after their
recent results, but we performed well." Phil Lynch, the
former England attacker, was the hero for Cheadle with four
goals, three of which came at crucial time in the match with
the score finely poised at 9-9.
Gareth Wilkinson, Paul Flowers and Daren Baythorpe also added
doubles, while Ian Wilkinson and Adrian Bennett were on the
scoresheet as Cheadle fought back from 3-1 behind in the first
quarter.
"Phil's goals were crucial for us," added Condron.
"Timperley came out of the blocks quickly but we kept
their Australian, Ryan Garnsworthy, quiet and after that his
head went down. Chris Brady was excellent for us in the face-off.
He really kept Garnsworthy at bay."
Billy Beaumont (4), James Shuttleworth (3), Andy Brickell,
John Hammond and Garnsworthy replied for Timperley.
Chris Stott was Boardman & Eccles' hero with four goals
as the Lancashire outfit defeat fellow relegation-strugglers
Brooklands Hulmeians 11-6 at Welbeck Road.
Stott was playing his first game this season after a spell
playing for St. Andrews University in North Carolina, America.
Neil Clarke (2), Dave Elwood (2), Simon Whitehead (2) and
Chris Brown were all on the scoresheet for Boardman as they
led throughout 3-2, 7-3 and 9-5.
