TIMPERLEY Lacrosse Club crowned National 8's champions
TIMPERLEY Lacrosse Club are toasting sweet success after
their Under-12 Boys' team were crowned National 8's champions
for the second year running. The talented Stockport Road side,
managed by Adam Sherlock and coached by Marcus Sandy, powered
their way to the prestigous title at Welwyn Garden City in
Hertfordshire. And en route to the final the promising youngsters
didn't even lose a game, winning all six of their tough matches
against some of the best teams in the country.
Victory was extra special for the boys who produced a sparkling
performance to win the tournament last year with victory over
Brooklands Hulmeians, from Sale. Timperley triumphed 7-1 over
Croydon Foxes, the only southern team to have ever reached
the final, this time around and won their group games dropping
just five goals.
Other wins came against Oldham (5-1), Welwyn (3-2), Spencer
(4-2), Nottingham (5-0) and Brooklands (5-1) in the semi-finals.
"I'm absolutely delighted for all the boys," said
Sherlock, who helped coached the team to success last year.
"To win the title two years on the trot is a real honour
for everyone involved at our club. We had some tough games,
but all the matches were played in a good spirit and we played
some great lacrosse."
David Gill was Timperley's hero in the final with four precious
goals, while Peter Hunt hit a brace and Greg Sandy also got
on the scoresheet to guide the south Manchester club to a
memorable victory. Gill finished with an impressive goal tally
of 14, the highest at the tournament, and is being tipped
to make a big impact in the game along with his fellow gifted
teammates. "We've got a really talented bunch of lads
at the club," added Sherlock, who is hoping to guide
his team to honours in the Onondaga Cup against arch-rivals
Mellor today at the Lacrosse Festival Weekend in Rochdale.
"It's been a good year for us and I think all the players
have bright futures ahead of them in lacrosse."
The Stockport Road side were also crowned the Tuscarora Cup
six-a-side champions this season and remained undefeated in
the league with a perfect record of played 20, won 20, scoring
304 goals and conceding 82 goals.
