Les Grainger honoured at Stockport Sport Awards
STOCKPORT Lacrosse Club stalwart Les Grainger has deservedly
been honoured for his tireless work in the sport - more than
half a decade after he first began playing.
The former school headmaster, who taught at Christ Chruch
Primary School in the borough, has been involved in lacrosse
for nearly all of his life and was delighted to have scooped
a special accolade from Stockport Council for his efforts.
Les received his award from Stockport Councillor Ingrid Shaw,
Executive Member for Leisure and Culture, at a glittering
ceremony.
The event was hosted by Stockport Sport Development and Stockport
Council at their first annual Stockport Sport Awards. The
awards are designed to celebrate and highlight the many examples
of sports achievement taking place in Stockport. Each of the
10 boroughs in Greater Manchester have hosted their local
awards and the winners of each of the award categories then
go on to represent their borough at the Greater Manchester
Sports Awards.
The Greater Manchester Coaching Development Forum in conjunction
with the Greater Manchester Sports Partnership have organised
the Greater Manchester Sports Awards. The Awards categories
were Coach of the Year, Club of the Year, Special recognition
to Sport Award, Young Volunteer to Sport Award and Sports
Performer of the Year. Les won the Stockport Award for Special
Recognition to Sport. Les won the award for more than 50 years
devoted service to the sport of lacrosse.
Les started his love of junior lacrosse in 1939. Since that
time he has championed the cause of juniors in lacrosse, and
since 1945 he has continuously run the juniors at Stockport
Lacrosse Club, well over half a century of tireless service.
In 1976 he started Stockport Metro Lacrosse Club for the purpose
of sports/educational exchanges with the USA.
