Trojans win their first English National League title
The
English Korfball Association (EKA) National League Premier
Division title came down to the last match of the season on
April 6th, with Mitcham (London) taking on Trojans (London).
It was the final match of the season for both teams and it
would decide who would lift the trophy. Trojans had won the
earlier match againt Mitcham, but on recent performance it
could have gone either way this time.
Mitcham were looking to show their continued dominance in
the English domestic competition, whilst Trojans were looking
to secure their first League title, after winning the Cup
competition last season for the first time.
On the day, there was little between the teams, but there
had to be one winner, and this time it was Trojans who came
out on top, winning the match by a single goal, and with it,
the coveted League Trophy.
Both teams play in the Cup quarter finals on April 20th,
and no doubt they will both be hoping to win the Cup event
as well.
At the top of the EKA First Division, Kingfisher easily won
their match against second from bottom North Downs, to secure
second place in the division and, perhaps more importantly,
the chance to play off for a place in the Premier Division
agains the 7th placed team in the current Premier Division.
At the bottom of the EKA Premier Division, despite some extremely
close games, Invicta Sharks (Kent) are automatically relegated
(replaced by Norwich Knights). The 7th place was fought between
Nomads and Croydon (both London). Croydon had won the reverse
fixture 11-6, so Nomads needed to win by at least 5 goals
in order to go above Croydon in the table. Croydon played
a slow and controlled game though, denying the home side the
chance to get ahead by more than 2 goals at any one time.
At the end of the 60 minutes the match was a draw, which means
Nomads will meet Kingfisher on April 27th to decide who will
be playing Premier Division Korfball next season.
And at the bottom of the EKA First Division, Supernova have
finished in 8th place, which means they will have to playoff
against the winner of new applicants Highbury
