Mitcham qualify for Europa Cup finals
English korfball champions Mitcham have qualified for the
finals of the 2007/08 Europa Cup (korfball’s equivalent
of the Champions League) after winning all their matches at
the eastern qualification competition in Germany.
Their Tournament started with a home nations win over Scottish
side, Edinburgh City (22 - 3), followed by another fairly
comfortable 10 - 3 win over Grasshopper from Luxemburg.
The last of the potential banana skins was safely navigated
against Bonson of France with a 14 - 7 win.
The day ended with the crunch match against the "old
enemy", local side Adler-Rauxel. Reports from the tournament
suggest that Mitcham played a great game, finding some results
to match their potential, winning the crucial fixture 11 –
7 to all but guarantee qualification.
In the first match of the second day, needing to only put
in a reasonable win over the Catalan champions CK Vacarisses,
Mitcham went a lot better and won in style 10-3. Even without
several key players such as Dean Woods who is out with a knee
injury and Karen Sparrow who is suffering from an underarm
cyst, Mitcham were able to go into their last game with a
perfect record. Mitcham then finished in style with with a
27 - 7 win over Italians EvanSalus – Padova to complete
qualification for the finals in Portugal next January.
