Great Britain lose to Netherlands
The Great Britain U21 korfball team lost their latest second-round
pool game 28-5 to tournament favourites the Netherlands, but
have still qualified for the semi-finals.
After the trauma of last night many of the British team were
not up for playing today but they were boosted by the news
that Dan Woolmer had been released from hospital and was recovering
in the team hotel. The Netherlands started like an express
train and we found ourselves seven behind in the first 8 minutes.
We then scored the first of what was to be only 3 goals in
the opening half, the last two coming in the last two minutes.
The Dutch, meanwhile, piled on the goals and led 19-3 at half
time. In the second half we played a little better and, coupled
with the Dutch seeming to relax a little, the score was only
9-2, leaving the final result as 28-5.
Today (Friday 10th) is semi-final day and we are taking on
the Belgians. If we lose then the bronze medal match will
be on Saturday and should be a repeat of our opening game,
against our old adversaries - Germany. However, the team hope
to give it a real go against the Belgians (who earlier in
the week just beat Russia by 1 goal) and aim to be the first
non-Benelux team to reach the final of this, the oldest of
the International Korfball Federation Championships.
