Great Britain open their European Youth Championships account
with a win
The Great Britain U21 team won their opening match at the
European Youth Championships on Sunday, 10-9 against Germany.
The game proved to be the closest and most competitive of
the day. Team GB started well, scoring the opening two goals
but were soon pegged back and went behind. At half time Germany
led 7-5. After an early tactical substitution Britain scored
the opening goal of the second half, but with just over 5
minutes played they found themselves 3 behind. Little did
the audience know but these were the last goals to be scored
by Germany in the match. We appeared to get stronger and with
just under 15 minutes left the scores were level. Both teams
were quite tense and missed several relatively easy chances.
Substitutions were tried by both teams in order to break the
deadlock but with just 6 minutes left it was the British that
got their noses ahead with a running in shot by Rebecca Woolmer.
The team then increased their commitment in defence, without
making mistakes by giving away free passes or penalties to
win the match by a single goal. Final score 10-9.
The next match will be today against the Czechs, who lost
18-11 to Germany on Monday.
