Mitcham win
BKA Cup
Mitcham have completed a league and cup double after winning
the British Korfball Association (BKA) Cup final 19-12 against
national league runners-up Invicta Sharks.
The county’s two top club sides had avoided each other
in earlier rounds, to produce this heavyweight final, held
on May 7th at the new world-class sporting facility at Croydon’s
Whitgift School.
Kent side Invicta held Mitcham at bay for the majority of
the first half, until Mitcham took control of the match just
before half-time to take the score from 6-all to 10-6. A dominant
second half performance then saw Mitcham extend their lead
to complete the double, with Great Britain international Steve
Green top scoring with 6 goals.
Before the cup final, the junior National Championship finals
took place, and the results were:
Under 9 – Scorpions (London) 4 v Tornadoes (Kent) 0
Under 11 - Nomads (Epsom) 4 v Tornadoes 6
Under 13 - Bearsted (Kent) 8 v Tornadoes Cyclones 4
Under 16 - Bearsted 7 v Cambridge Tigers 8
In a separate event the day before, the National U23 championships
were held at St Mary’s College, Twickenham. South London
team Trojans came out on top, beating Mitcham 8-5 in the final.
The prestigious best male and female player in the competitions
were awarded to Dean Woods (Mitcham) and Neala Brennan (Nomads).
The Sportsmanship Award was presented to the University of
East Anglia.
