England are Commonwealth Champions
England became the first Commonwealth Korfball Champions
when they won the Commonwealth and Friends Tournament held
at Whitgift School, Croydon from July 14th-16th.
The inaugural Commonwealth Championships was opened up to
include guest teams from Ireland and North America to aid
korfball development in these countries. The results from
the first day showed no real surprises with the teams from
England, South Africa and Australia leading the way.
The second day of this event had several very close matches,
with two of the matches level at full time. The day opened
with the North American team gaining their first win in the
tournament at the expense of Scotland. South Africa then drew
with Ireland and Wales drew with Australia. England, on the
other hand, showed why they were favourites for the title
with two big wins, the last one being against Australia who
was restricted to just two scores from penalties in the whole
match.
England then clinched the title with a win over South Africa
in a hard fought match on Sunday morning. The score did not
really reflect the level of korfball played in the match but
the England team were superior in their scoring efforts, thereby
winning the match. Although they still had Scotland to play
at the end of the event, this proved to be a mere formality
and the title was theirs.
South Africa clinched the tournament's silver medal, pipping
one of the 'friends' teams - Ireland - due to their better
result against the team ranked immediately above them (England).
Had overall goal difference for the event be used instead,
the placings would have been more emphatic than the one goal
difference that actually decided the medals.
