Korfball National League Roundup 29th-30th October
Mitcham are the early leaders of the British Korfball Association
National League Premier Division after their second win of
the season, a hard-fought 14-11 victory over Nottingham. With
just two minutes to go to half-time, the scores were level
at 6-6, but Mitcham scored two crucial goals just before the
break and two just after. Although Mitcham never conceded
this lead, Nottingham kept the pressure on right until the
end of the match but could not quite force an equaliser.
However, Nottingham did not leave London empty-handed, because
they had defeated Croydon 14-12 the previous day in the first
match of their away double-header. In a match full of momentum
swings, Nottingham dropped from 7-3 up, midway through the
first half, to 9-7 down at half-time, but bounced back in
the second half to establish a three-goal lead five minutes
from the end of the match and held on for victory.
Last year’s champions, Invicta, looked impressive in
defeating South London team Trojans, who had finished third
in the 2004/05 season, 18-11. Epsom-based club Nomads were
the day’s other victors, after a 15-10 win over Kent
team Kwiek. However, Nomads will face a sterner test next
Sunday when they face Invicta, in the only National League
match of the weekend, as the remainder of the league take
a weekend off to make way for the first round of the national
BKA Cup.
In Division One, there were only two matches. National League
newcomers Norwich Knights looked set to pull off a shock result
against last year’s runners-up Cambridge, leading 9-5
at half-time. However, Cambridge recovered to eventually win
13-11, with Francis van Horck leading the scoring with five
goals. In the division’s other match, Kent team Kingfisher
hosted Norwich City and the home team came out on top 18-10.
The remaining teams in this division, Supernova (based Battersea,
London), Manchester and North Downs (based North Surrey),
open their league campaigns in mid-November.
