British Korfball Association National League Roundup 12th-13th
November
Mitcham and Invicta Sharks both still lead the way in British
korfball’s National League Premier Division, both now
with three wins out of three.
Mitcham hosted South London rivals Croydon at their home
venue of Trinity School, and at first it seemed as though
the script was not being followed, at Croydon, despite being
without injured first team regular Steve Jones, held Mitcham
4-4 early on in the match. A time-out allowed Mitcham to regroup,
and as the Croydon goals started to dry up, Mitcham were able
to take control of the match and win 16-8.
Mitcham’s closest rivals in the table, champions Invicta
Sharks, also maintained their 100% record with a very close
14-12 win over their Kent neighbours Kwiek. Although the match
was closer than Invicta will have liked, they will now be
gearing themselves up for the home match with Mitcham on November
27th, a match which may go a long way towards deciding the
destination of the 2005/06 National League title.
Nomads, who had lost 24-13 to Invicta in the only National
League match played the previous weekend, fell to another
defeat, this time 18-14 to Bec, who continued their good form
in all competitions. Bec, as the division’s newly-promoted
team, were one of only two Premier Division teams to enter
the BKA Cup at the first-round stage, and had progressed through
that pool the week before after wins over Milton Keynes and
Cardiff Dragons.
In the other Premier Division match, Trojans saw off Nottingham
10-7 in a low-scoring match as Nottingham played a league
match for the first time in their new home venue at Bilborough
College’s new sports facility. Although they will be
disappointed with the defeat, Nottingham can still draw some
comfort from their improved form this season, while Trojans
could still be dark horses for the title.
In the only Division One games, North Downs traveled to Norfolk
to play a double-header of matches, and returned to Surrey
with the maximum four points, after first defeating Norwich
City 12-10 in a tight match on Saturday, and then following
that up the following day with a 13-5 victory over Norwich
Knights. North Downs are also Division One’s only survivor
into the second round of the BKA Cup, and have been given
a tough draw at home to Bec on 18th December.
