British Korfball Association National League Roundup 10th-11th
December
The British Korfball Association National League now takes
a break for Christmas, hoping for a continued higher profile
in 2006 following the recent korfball feature on BBC London
Tonight.
Former Crystal Palace and Charlton striker Mark Bright, normally
seen these days poring over a laptop on Grandstand on Saturday
afternoons, swapped the studio for the sports hall on December
9th to interview Great Britain korfball international Vicki
Kellaway in front of a demonstration match featuring her club
Trojans and other London players, along with footage profiling
the game. With junior korfball also set to soon feature on
BBC Newsround spin-off Sportsround, these are exciting times
for the sport.
In the weekend’s matches, league leaders Mitcham overcame
Kwiek by 14 goals to 8, with Ross Bower and Steve Green top-scoring
with five goals each, although Mitcham were disappointed with
their own performance. Mitcham’s nearest rivals Invicta
Sharks defeated Bec 17-12 to remain in second place, while
third-placed Trojans followed up their Friday night TV cameo
with the most comfortable win of the weekend, defeating local
rivals Croydon 18-8. Trojans, who are also based in Croydon
themselves, raced into a 4-0 lead in the first five minutes,
and then after Croydon temporarily stopped the rot, went up
an extra gear in the second half to turn an 8-5 halftime lead
into an 18-8 win.
Nottingham bounced back from two defeats the previous weekend
to defeat bottom-of-the-table Nomads 13-8 and moved up to
fourth place in the table, an impressive mid-season performance
especially considering the team had lost four players from
the side who had finished seventh last season.
There were also three Division 1 matches, and a change of
leadership in the division, as Kingfisher took full advantage
of previous leaders North Downs having a week off, to leapfrog
them and move to the top of the table after making the long
trip from Kent to Manchester and coming away with a 14-5 win.
Manchester are now bottom of the table, albeit having up to
three games in hand on other teams, as Norwich City picked
up their first points of the season with a tight 9-8 win over
local rivals Norwich Knights. Cambridge were the day’s
other winners, gaining revenge for the previous week’s
defeat by beating Supernova 16-9.
