The 2007-08 Samsung ISU World Cup Short Track season concluded
this weekend in Salt Lake City, United States of America,
with the sixth and final round of the World Cup Season. The
event was held at the Utah Olympic Oval.
The Korean and Chinese teams had a second consecutive weekend
of impressive performances. The Korean team left Salt Lake
City with 10 medals, while the Chinese team took 8 medals.
The team of the United States of America imitated what their
Canadian counterparts managed the previous weekend, and took
advantage of home ice and local spectator support. The team
of the United States earned an impressive 6 medals this weekend.
The schedule of races at this weekend’s Samsung ISU
World Cup Short Track had the athletes compete in the 500
meters distance twice. The ladies 500 meters events were dominated
by the skaters from China, who earned four podium places.
The first of the ladies 500 meters event was won by Meng Wang
of China. With her win, she clinched her second consecutive
first place ranking in this distance in the World Cup series.
Her teammate Nannan Zhao finished second, while Australian
Tatiana Borodulina took third, earning her first individual
World Cup podium of the season.
In the second ladies 500 meters event, Evgenia Radanova of
Bulgaria continued on her quick form from the previous weekend,
to take the win. Chinese skaters Tian Yu Fu and Quihong Liu
finished second and third respectively.
In the first of the men’s 500 meters event, Charles
Hamelin of Canada took the win, while Si- Bak Sung (Korea)
and Satoru Terao (Japan) finished second and third place respectively.
In the second of the men’s 500 meters event, Si-Bak
Sung of Korea took the win, thus clinching the overall win
in this distance in the World Cup series. Second place in
the event went to his teammate Yoon-Gy Kwak while Francois
Hamelin of Canada finished third.
The ladies 1500 meters event provided a surprise result,
as the skaters from Korea were excluded not only from the
top place on the podium, but from all podium places for the
first time this World Cup season. Zhou Yang of China finished
first, ahead of the two American skaters, Katherine Reutter
(second) and Allison Baver (third). On the men’s side,
first and second places went to Korean skaters Seung-Hoon
Lee and Ho-Suk Lee. Apolo Anton Ohno of the United States
pleased the crowd with a third place finish. The top honors
in the 1500 meters World Cup series classification went to
Korean skaters Sun-Yu Jin (ladies) and Ho- Suk Lee (men’s).
The ladies 1000 meters event was won for a second consecutive
weekend by Meng Wang of China. Katherine Reutter of the United
States earned her second podium finish of the weekend with
a second place finish. Korean skater Shin-Young Yang finished
third. The men’s 1000 meters event was won by American
skater Apolo Anton Ohno. Second and third places went to Korean
skaters Seung-Hoon Lee and Ho-Suk Lee respectively. World
Cup series classification top honors for this distance also
went to Korean skaters; Sun-Yu Jin for the ladies classification,
and Hyun-Soo Ahn for the men’s, despite missing the
last two World Cup events.
The weekend concluded with the relay events, with similar
outcomes in the top two places in both the ladies 3000m and
men’s 5000m races. The Korean teams won both the ladies
and men’s relay events, while the Chinese teams took
second in both events. The ladies relay team from the United
States offered their fans a third place finish, while the
team from Great Britain finished third in the men’s
5000m relay event.
The next ISU Short Track event is the ISU World Short Track
Speed Skating Championships in Gangneung City, Republic of
