The first of six events in the Samsung ISU World Cup Short
Track 2007/2008 series concluded in Harbin, China on Sunday.
More than 150 world class athletes from 22 countries contested
the 500m, 1000m, 1500m (twice) and relay distances. Korea
took 6 gold medals, China 3 gold medals and 1 win went to
Canada.
The three-day event began with Friday’s preliminaries
and Saturday finals saw Cho Ha-Ri and Sung Si-Bak of Korea
dominate in ladies’ and men’s 1500 meter respectively.
Cho Ha-Ri led a Korean one-two finish in the ladies’
race, while Shin Sae-Bom came in second. Enthusiastic Harbin
spectators cheered for Zhou Yang of China who took the bronze
medal. Sung Si-Bak and Lee Seung-Hoon of Korea finished first
and second respectively with Charles Hamelin of Canada completing
the podium.
Wang Meng (CHN), the local favorite, led the 1000 meter final
from the start to the finish. Koreans Jung Eun-Ju and Jin
Sun-Yu took silver and bronze respectively.
In the 1000 meter men, five times World Champion Anh Hyun-Soo
of Korea beat his compatriot Lee Ho-Suk who finished second.
François Louis Tremblay of Canada spoiled Koreans hope
to wrap up all the three medals on the distance as he crossed
the line in third position ahead of Song Kyung-Taek.
On Sunday
Korean athletes again dominated the 1500 meter on Sunday.
In the ladies’ race, Jin Sun-Yu (KOR) passed teammate
Yang Shin Young in the last lap to take gold. Yang Shin Young
finished second and Liu Quihong of China third. The Korean
men showed their strength in the long distance as Olympic
champion Ahn Hyun-Soo nailed down the 1500m title. His teammates
Lee Ho-Suk finished second and Song Kyung-Taek was third to
complete a Korean medal sweep.
In the Ladies 500 meters Wang Meng made a remake of her Saturday’s
race in the 1000 meters, leading from start to finish. Her
teammate Fu Tian Yu finished close second ahead of Park Seung-Hi
of Korea.
François-Louis Tremblay won the only gold of the weekend
for Canada in the 500 meters men. Sung, Si-Bak (KOR) and Alex
Boisvert-Lacroix (CAN) took silver and bronze respectively.
China defeated Korea in the ladies’ 3000m relay. Canada
was in third place. In the men 5,000m relay Korea cruised
to the title. Canada and Italy finished second and third respectively.
The next Samsung ISU World Cup Short Track event takes place
on October 26-28 in Kobe, Japan.
