Samsung ISU World Cup Short Track
Heerenveen (NED) 23-25 November 2007
The third round off the ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating
event took place this weekend in Heerenveen. The races in
the Thialf Hall, were once again dominated by the Asian skaters.
Korea performed outstanding, winning seven off nine finales.
The men from Korea won all five finals, the ladies were twice
the best. The other three finals were won by the Chinese ladies.
They were the best in finals off the 500 meters and the relay
3000 meters.
Only three individual medals were won by skaters out off
Asia. Canada took silver with Francois-Louis Tremblay (second
500 m) and with Charles Hamelin (first 500 m). Hamelin secured
a second medal with bronze on the 1000 m. Italy and Russia
took silver and bronze in the relay women.
On the men’s side Korea was outstanding on the 1500
meters. They took all medals. Lee Ho-Suk beat his fellow-countrymen
Song Kyung-Soo and Hyun-Soo Ahn. Ahn got his revenge on the
1000 meters. The Korean-superstar won the distance in 1.24,385.
That was a new world record. Ahn was 0,3 seconds faster then
the old mark from the Chinese Jianjun Ji in 2004.
The final 1000 meters on Sunday was one big show. Ahn started
well and only his Korean-mate Ho-Suk Lee could follow the
Olympic champion. Lee also finished in between off the old
world best mark. The crowd was exited about the performance
off both skaters.
Also in the ladies 1500, Korea showed their strength. This
time Jung Eun-Ju won the race. The first two World Cup races
were won by Jin Sun-Yu. She finished in Heerenveen as second.
The bronze medal went to Zhou Yang from China.
The Chinese ladies had the best skaters on de two 500 meters.
On Saturday in the final Wang Meng won, on Sunday her teamcollegue
Liu Qiuhiong was the strongest. China earned five medals in
the short distance. Korea won silver with Park Seung-Hi on
the first 500 meters. In the second final of the 500 meters
women three Chinese skaters dominated the Italian Arianna
Fontana. With Liu winning, her teammates Zhao Nannan en Tian
Yu Fu took silver and bronze.
China dominated also the relay-women. Italy, Russia and
Korea were left to fight for silver and bronze. Italy became
second, Russia third.

a hard fight with the Chinese team, but won in 6.59,774. China
came close with 6.59,916. Japan took bronze with 7.05,774.
