Tom Searle is the BHS Young Instructor of the Year 2007

Tom Searle from Gloucestershire was named as the BHS Young Instructor of the Year at Warwickshire College on Thursday, 25 October 2007.

Jane Goldsmith FBHS, Jennie Loriston–Clarke FBHS and Margaret Linington–Payne BHSI and BHS Director of Standards, judged the final of the competition, which is sponsored by South Essex Insurance Brokers.

Tom, who is 24 and holds the BHSII qualification, successfully competed against nine other finalists, all of whom had qualified at regional competitions held at BHS Approved Centres throughout 2007. Tom’s regional qualifier was at Liege Manor Equestrian Centre, South Wales in August.

Tom said: "I think the BHS Young Instructor of the Year competition gives much needed direction to people like myself and I am delighted to have won it.

"It was only right at the end when things had gone well and I had enjoyed the whole day, that I allowed myself to hope I could win."

All of the finalists were required to teach private lessons lasting 30 minutes in both dressage and show jumping, and deliver a practical stable management lecture to a group of three students. Finalists also had to complete an interview with the BHS Communications Executive.

Jane Goldsmith FBHS said: "The standard of the ten finalists was excellent but it was Tom’s enthusiasm and committed approach to his teaching which won the judges over."

Margaret Linington–Payne, BHS Director of Standards, said: "Tom showed that he had clearly thought out and planned his lecture topic. His technical knowledge and understanding of the topic which covered assessing the fitness and condition of a horse was excellent."

Sam Whale, BHS Training Executive, said: "The programme is continually being developed to assist with the progression of BHS Instructors knowledge and skills. The introduction of the lecture topic this year ensured that the finalists were assessed in all key areas."

The 2008 Competition will begin in spring next year. Each applicant must hold a minimum of the BHS Preliminary Teaching Test and be 30 years or under on 1 January 2008. Dates for regional qualifiers will be released by the end of December 2007.
