The British Horse Society asks football fans to give horses
a wide berth
The British Horse Society is urging England Football supporters
to be aware of the dangers their flapping flags could create
for horses and riders when driving vehicles covered with the
English flag.
According to police in Hampshire, dangerous displays of patriotism
can scare wildlife and cause horses to bolt. This could result
in criminal prosecution.
Sheila Hardy, BHS Senior Executive of the Safety Department,
said: “The BHS understands fans wishing to show their
support for the England team by flying English flags.
“However, we would ask everyone to be aware that horses
are likely to be startled by the loud flutter that car window
flags generate.”
The BHS is urging drivers to slow down and give horses a
wide berth when overtaking. Supporters should consider flying
flags only on the offside of their vehicle.
