BHS Scotland celebrates 40th birthday with Funnells, porridge
and bagpipes
A celebratory atmosphere, a sell-out venue and Pippa and
William Funnell as star guests meant the 40th anniversary
of British Horse Society Scotland was honoured in great style
on Friday, January 20, at Gleneagles Equestrian Centre, Auchterarder.
During the Masterclass, Pippa and William demonstrated how
they choose and train horses and help riders - and gave insight
into their philosophy and approach to their disciplines.
The Funnells also rejoined the BHS at the event and urged
non-members in the audience to follow suit by saying: "The
BHS works for all horses and riders whatever their level of
enjoyment of the sport. We would all be worse off without
an organisation to campaign for safer roads to ride on, off-road
riding and raised standards of horsemanship."
The Masterclass followed two days of training clinics with
Pippa and William teaching side by side.
BHS Scotland Development Officer Helene Mauchlen said: "We
cannot thank Pippa and William enough for being so accommodating
and willing to turn their hands to anything - it was an amazing
48 hours.
"Almost 1,000 people turned out on Friday evening to
watch the Masterclass and the feedback has been fabulous.
We had a piper and birthday cake."
A drinks party for BHS volunteers over the 40 years was honoured
to be addressed by Rhona Brankin, Scotland's Deputy Minister
for Environmental and Rural Development, who emphasised how
the Scottish Executive places great value on BHS consultations
when preparing policy.
BHS Scotland founder member Mrs Margaret Runcie cut the birthday
cake and drew the lucky programme.
During her time in Scotland, Pippa Funnell had discovered
porridge so, after much advice and discussion on cooking porridge,
she was presented with a jumbo size box of porridge oats,
a spirtle (special wooden stick for stirring porridge) and
two Funnell tartan porringers.
