The British Horse Society makes submission on DfES's Outside
Classroom consultation
The British Horse Society has made a submission to the Department
for Education and Skills (DfES) consultation on the Education
Outside the Classroom Manifesto.
In the submission, the BHS points out that the Society is
heavily engaged in the kind of extra-curricular activities
which the DfES is seeking to promote, and also that privately
run equestrian establishments, such as the BHS-Approved Lord's
House Farm, in Lancashire, are doing excellent work for the
socially or educationally disadvantaged.
Among the BHS work highlighted in the submission were the
Riding Opportunities Scheme, the Lee Valley Project, four
new schemes supported by Sport England and similar projects
in Scotland and Wales.
The BHS's Director of Standards Margaret Linington-Payne
said: "This is a vital process. The impact that involvement
with horses can have on people's behaviour, lifestyles and
academic success is enormous."
The Education Outside the Classroom Manifesto was announced
by Education Secretary Ruth Kelly in November last year. The
Manifesto, which aims to provide all children and young people
with high quality learning opportunities outside the classroom,
is scheduled to be published this spring.
