Sport England and The British Horse Society support High
School students on riding and stables programme
Students at a Cheshire school are to be the first to take
part in a Sport England and BHS-supported programme of Horse
Riding and Stable Management training.
The scheme at Weaverham High, believed to be the first of
its kind in Cheshire, will be paid for through Sport England
participation funding with the BHS. It is the result of a
partnership between Sandy Lane Equestrian owner Carl Tommons
and BHS North West Regional Development Officer Sarah Caplan.
Sarah said: "I am delighted that we are now able to
offer more children in Cheshire the opportunity to learn to
ride. Horse riding has been shown to have a very positive
effect across all age groups both mentally and physically.
It really is a sport for life."
Carl said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for all
involved. We have been working with Sarah for some time on
the project, and to see it come to fruition is wonderful.
Everyone involved is very excited and discussions have already
begun with other school units."
Teacher Paul Finlay, of Weaverham High, has also been heavily
involved with this project.
He said: "There is a great deal of excitement at the
school about this scheme, from both students and staff.
"It offers a diversion from the usual sports played
at schools, such as football and rugby. The scheme also fits
well with current government targets to increase the level
of student participation in physical activities."
If successful, it is hoped that the project will be extended
to other Vale Royal schools and becoming self-financing and
a fixture in the school curriculum.
