The BHS's President Noel Edmonds launches Complete Horse
& Pony Care
The British Horse Society’s President Noel Edmonds
launched a definitive guide to owning and caring for a horse
or pony – at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials
2005.
Noel hosted a reception to unveil The British Horse Society
Complete Horse & Pony Care, published by Collins, on Friday,
6 May, with Chief Executive Graham Cory.
At the launch at the BHS stand, Noel said: “This is
a very important moment for The British Horse Society. Even
a cursory glance at this book will show you the enormous amount
of work that has gone into it.
“It is far more than a working handbook. It would grace
any coffee table, with its excellent contributors. The BHS
can feel proud of it . . . I commend it to you.”
The book provides a wealth of up-to-date information on every
aspect of horse care - from basic stable management, handling,
diet and health care to preventing common injuries.
Areas covered include choosing a horse or pony, housing and
handling your horse, grass management, safety and equipment,
grooming and shoeing, feeding and diet, exercising and transporting
your horse, showing and competitions, and equine health.
The BHS’s Director of Standards Margaret Linington-Payne,
who edited the book, said: “We are absolutely delighted
to be launching The British Horse Society Complete Horse and
Pony Care at Badminton today.
“Although the book is aimed primarily at novice riders
and owners, it is comprehensive and appealing. It is generating
a great deal of interest among BHS members and all those who
want to learn more about caring for horses.”
Also at Badminton, top trainers Captain Mark Phillips CVO,
Ian Stark OBE and Kenneth Clawson received British Horse Society
Honorary Fellowships from BHS Chairman Patrick Print and BHS
Fellows Association Chairman Tessa Martin-Bird in the main
dressage arena.
Honorary Fellowship is the highest honour bestowed by The
British Horse Society. Each has great achievements in the
equestrian world.
Ian Stark won team Silver at the Sydney Olympics in 2000
and team Gold at the European Championships in Luhmuhlen,
Germany, in 1999. He is currently coach of the Brazilian Olympic
Three Day Event Team, and trains British riders for Pony,
Junior and Young Rider teams.
Captain Phillips has won Gold and Silver medals at the Olympics
and is currently coaching the United States Equestrian Team
for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also launched the Mark Phillips
Equestrian Centre – in Scotland – embracing all
levels of equestrianism.
Kenneth Clawson coached and produced many Pony, Junior and
Young Riders to represent Great Britain in the Show Jumping
teams in the 1970s and early 1980s. In 1997, he became the
Show Jumping coach to the British Three Day Event team. His
achievements include four European Team Golds, and individual
medals, including Gold, at last year’s Athens Olympics.
