British Riding Clubs Festival of the Hunter 2005
Sponsored by Kbis Equine Insurance
The 2005 Kbis-sponsored Festival of the Hunter took place
on Sunday 1 May at Wittering - with nearby Peterborough forecast
as the hottest place in the UK.
Competition started at 9.15am with the Senior Open Hunter
Trials enjoying the first trip through the water crossings.
The Junior class followed on with the Senior Novice last.
The hunter trials sections saw just under 300 competitors
over the course and 100 showing entries.
The course received much praise this year and landowner Robin
Dunlop was delighted with the feedback, as were the course
officials.
BRC Chairman, Laurie Punnett said: "Once again, Robin
Dunlop and his team at Grange Farm produced two excellent
courses and made us all very welcome. The courses had a good
mixture of technical and hunter-trial fences which asked just
enough questions.
"Competitors aren't allowed to wear stopwatches and
the undulating ground put a premium on their ability to judge
their speed. Indeed, several riders managed to finish within
a second or two of the optimum time. Spectators could see
most of the cross-country from the trade stand area and the
atmosphere was electric. We very much look forward to the
2006 event."
The showing classes were of a high standard and the judges
commented on how good it was to see horses and ponies who
were not overweight. The three judges took part in the Best
in Show Championship which was open to the first and second
placed competitors from each of the showing classes.
The Lightweight Ridden Hunter saw the return of 2004 title
holder Caroline Middleton from Rockingham Forest RC looking
to defend her crown. Not only did Caroline and Law Student
pull out all the stops to remain the Lightweight Champion
but in the judges opinions she was Best in Show.
A delighted Caroline accepted her Champions rosette and sash.
The Reserve title went to the Working Hunter Pony Champion,
Frances Zysemil with Dolygarn from Rother Valley RC.
The Working Hunter Horse title went to Caroline Hawkins and
Hesa Euphonic from Naphill RC. The judge was very impressed
with the ride he gave her and said he was a lovely type.
Kbis Equine Insurance has sponsored this championship event
for four consecutive years. Liz Prest from Kbis Equine Insurance
was on hand to award prizes and ribbons to the champions.
Liz said: of the event "I was delighted as always with
the Festival of the Hunter, the atmosphere is always so happy
and relaxed. I particularly enjoyed talking to the competitors
in the line up and what is so rewarding is the appreciation
they show for the event and their horses.
"It was lovely that the rider of the best in show was
so thrilled, the Working Hunter Pony who was Reserve Champion
also competed in the hunter trials with the son as well as
winning the WHP. This event always shows horses and riders
at their best and reminds us of the reason we all ride."
Senior Open
Darlington RC had an amazing run taking both the team championship
title and the four scores to count title. The individual title
went to Sarah Watkins and Morgan, representing the Flint and
Denbigh RC.
Juniors
Huntingdon RC from Cambridgeshire was the winners in the junior
team championship. Individually, Holly Cummings and Simply
Red beat all the competition to take the silverware. The all
four scores to count title went to West Somerset RC.
Senior Novice
North Oxfordshire RC took the team title with the best three
scores throughout the competition. Individual honours went
to Tanya Davis and Popeye from Corbridge RC in Northumberland.
The Corbridge team had cause for another celebration when
they were also awarded the trophy for the best four scores
to count.
