The British Horse Society celebrates its 60,000th member
with Noel Edmonds
The British Horse Society today (Tuesday, March 15) celebrated
its 60,000th member - with its President Noel Edmonds giving
lucky recruit Lucy Haynes a batch of prizes.
Noel presented 29-year-old Lucy with champagne, a certificate
– and two years’ free membership of The British
Horse Society, a charity which works for riders and horses.
The presentation, which took place at award-winning Ross
Nye’s Stables next to Hyde Park, London, came after
a rapid increase in The British Horse Society’s membership
as Britain’s two-and-a-half million riders woke up to
the advantages of becoming members of The BHS.
Noel said: “I'd like to thank and congratulate everyone
who has contributed to The BHS reaching this wonderful milestone.
“Breaking through the 60,000-member barrier gives The
BHS more influence in everything it undertakes. New members
are joining us every day now and I would urge every one of
Britain's two-and-a-half million riders to join the BHS and
reap the huge benefits of being part of the UK's foremost
equestrian organisation.”
Noel added: “I am part of the new drive to reposition
The British Horse Society. I believe we have to pull together
all the equestrian disciplines for the benefit of horses and
riders. The horse world is good at whingeing but not as good
at paying compliments.”
Lucy said: “I am absolutely delighted. I decided to
join The British Horse Society partly because of The BHS exams
I am taking and partly because of the support The Society
gives riders in areas such as welfare, safety, access and
through its magazine British Horse.
“I feel very honoured to be The Society’s 60,000th
member. I’ve been riding all my life and am keen to
support all the valuable work done by The British Horse Society.”
Lucy added: “It is fantastic to be the 60,000th member.
I have really enjoyed today’s launch.”
Project manager Lucy, who lives and works in London, rides
her mother’s horse, Poppy, in Leicestershire.
The BHS’s Chairman Patrick Print FBHS, Vice-Chairman
Helen Manns, Chief Executive Graham Cory were also present
at the BHS-approval stables, which Ross Nye has run for 40
years.
Mr Print said: “This is indeed a milestone achievement
for The BHS and thanks must go to the members of staff and
volunteers who have worked so hard to reach this figure. The
Society looks forward to the next milestone."
Emma Day, Senior Executive in The BHS’s membership
department, said: “Members are joining at a rapid rate.
In February alone, we enjoyed a net gain of nearly 560 members.
Furthermore, our trade membership has reached an all-time
high of 61.”
