Sue Perks defends her title at the BHS TREC Welsh Championships
The BHS TREC Welsh Championships produced a fantastic defending
Champion - Sue Perks from Kinver.
She defended her Level 3 title from last year and produced
a formidable ride with her horse Floss, winning with a convincing
lead. Ifor Williams Trailers Ltd and Performance Equestrian
sponsored the event. The prizes were presented by Steve Beresford
of Performance Equestrian.
Hilary Barnard from Bristol won the senior title and Trans
Wales Trophy Level 4. She rode Harvey round the challenging
courses with ease and her overall result placed her well above
the other competitors.
The Bryn Sion Trophy at Level 2 went to Stephen Benbow from
Welshpool. This was only his third ever TREC competition and
he achieved an astounding result with Springhill Seren.
The Level 3 Pairs trophies went to Ian Macalindin and Nigel
Robinson - thanks to the substantial lead they acquired on
the first day. Sarah Sneyd and Lis Rowe took the Ann Pitman-Thomas
Shields at Level 2 in a tight race with Christine Turner and
Helen Littler who trailed only by eight points.
The two-day competition tested both horses and riders on
navigating across unfamiliar terrain, control of the horse's
paces and riding skills around a course of obstacles.
The first day had competitors tackling a technically difficult
map-reading course, designed by Sue Jones and Lorraine Owens,
through the Llantysilio Mountains and taking in the famous
Horseshoe Pass overlooking Llangollen. The route through typically
splendid Welsh scenery was testing throughout, but all the
riders returned having enjoyed a true Championship challenge.
BHS Technical Delegate Rob Jones said, "This was an
excellent Championship event with riders from all over the
British Isles enjoying a great welcome to Wales. Each phase
of this very competitive event produced the right level of
challenge for a Championship and even riders who had struggled
went away feeling satisfaction at having not been defeated
by the challenge, glad that they had made the journey to Corwen."
The competition was professionally organised and Sue Jones
and Louise Owens deserve all the credit for this flawless
event.
