Children's riding project proves galloping success
Twenty-four children - the majority with special needs -
have taken part in two 10-week projects for preliminary horse
riding and pony care.
The children from schools in South Wales took part in the
project funded by a British Horse Society (BHS) legacy.
The first project was held at the City of Cardiff Riding
School last autumn. The second finished on Wednesday, 6 July
at Liege Manor Farm Equestrian Centre, Vale of Glamorgan,
Wales.
Jan Roche, BHS Development Officer for Wales, and PC Steve
Carpenter, the area Wise4life co-ordinator, were responsible
for organising the projects. They proved very successful in
building self-confidence and motivation among the pupils.
In attendance to present certificates and BHS Cymru rosettes
was Superintendent Susan Hayes, South Wales Police Divisional
Commander for The Vale of Glamorgan.
Superintendent Hayes said: "The youngsters involved
had no previous equine experience but through their commitment
and enthusiasm they mastered the basics of horse riding.
"It has been a unique opportunity and South Wales Police
is immensely grateful to The British Horse Society for making
this possible."
The supervising teacher said that the change in confidence,
attitude and behaviour of the children was remarkable.
