The British Horse Society receives award for Child Protection
work
BHS Trustee Donald Kear BHSI and Pat Gaywood, Lead Officer
for Equity and Child Protection for The British Horse Society
and the British Equestrian Federation, have received an award
for child protection work of the BHS and BEF.
Steve Boocock, Director of the NSPCC/Sport England Child
Protection in Sport Unit, presented the Bronze Preliminary
Award for the Child Protection in Sport Standard, at the BHS
/ Longines Royal International Horse Show, Hickstead, on Thursday,
28 July.
Mr Boocock congratulated the BHS and particularly Mrs Gaywood,
who is a BHS Regional Development Officer, for the "incredible
work" she has done in this vital area.
Mr Kear said the award was an important landmark. "It
is a process by which we set standards and it is up to us
to apply those standards and ensure that they work within
the BHS and BEF," he said.
Mrs Gaywood said: "It is nice to be recognised for the
work that has been done on behalf of all the horse industry.
I am hopeful we will be working with other organisations including
the British Show Pony Society (BSPS) to provide child protection
training in the near future."
Earlier in the day, Mrs Gaywood welcomed The British Horse
Society's first female Fellow to the BHS stand.
Yvonne 'Peggy' Lucas, a founder member of the BHS who passed
the Fellowship exam in 1948, said: "I have enjoyed my
long involvement with the BHS and always supported its work
of improving facilities for horses and riders."
Peggy, who was a wartime transit pilot of Spitfires and Hercules
planes,
said: "I took the Fellowship exam with four men, including
a former Cavalry officer. They all failed - and I passed."
