BHS Access Week 2005

The British Horse Society is holding its Access Week this year from Saturday, May 21 to Bank Holiday Monday, May 30.

The week is The British Horse Society's annual event to raise awareness of access issues and the work being done by the BHS's staff, volunteers and Affiliated Bridleways Groups on behalf of riders across the UK.

Access Week will also see the presentation of the 5th Riders' Charter Follow Up Awards ("the Access Awards"), which are given to highlight good practice by authorities, individuals and organisations working in the field of equestrian rights of way.

Events planned for Access Week include:

* The unveiling of a new All Weather Gallop, at Smithills Country Park,
Bolton, Lancashire, on Sunday, 22 May, when there will also be a ride starting from the Horrocks Fold car park at 10am - both events organised by Smithills and District Bridleways Association,
* A charity fun ride on coastal bridleways organised by Purbeck and
District Riding Club, Dorset, raising funds for Dorset BHS Bridleways Fund and the Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund,
* An Access and Rights of Way Training day in Keythorpe, Leicestershire,
on Thursday, 24 May, and
* A talk entitled "A quick canter around rights of way with Robin Carr",
organised by Lancashire BHS, and
* The opening of an underpass beneath the M1 and A41 to link bridleways
in Bushey, Hertfordshire, after a 15-year fight by BHS campaigners which has meant riders crossing at grade [through the traffic] during this time. Details of the opening are to be confirmed.

Hannah Cohen, Senior Executive in the BHS's Access and Rights of Way Department, said: "Please get involved in Access Week! Find out what's going on in your area and join in. It is an ideal opportunity to meet new people and explore the off road riding and driving opportunities available.

"There's never been a more important time to join in, and help us defend, extend and promote the equestrian rights of way network. Find out more about the work we do, and how grassroots riders can make a significant difference to the rights of riders at this crucial time for the UK's equestrian routes."
