VANESSA PROVES SHE CAN GO IT ALONE IN BHS TREC WELSH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Vanessa Warren, from Bridgwater in Somerset, rode to triumph on her horse Zara IX at the Wynnstay Farmers BHS TREC Welsh Championships last weekend.

Taking the Level 2 Individual title, sponsored by Performance Equestrian, Quantock Riding Club member Vanessa was building on the success she previously achieved as part of the Quantock Cavalleros partnership, having taken the Level 2 Pairs Welsh title last year, with Ros Wood.

Ninety riders travelled from all over the UK to take part in this unique two day competition, on 12-13 June, in the stunning setting of Oswestry Equestrian Centre. BHS TREC tests horse and rider on navigating across unfamiliar terrain, control of the horse's paces and then riding skills around a course of obstacles. The event, organised by The British Horse Society, attracted the largest entry seen at a championship in this country with intense competition in all the classes.

Level 2 Pairs saw another title for reigning British Champions Elaine Greenwood and Carolyn Hird-Rogers from North Yorkshire. Level 3 winners were Sue Perks from Kinver riding her Thoroughbred mare Chloe with Kay Newman (Worcester) and Diana Hawkins (Herefordshire) crowned Pairs Champions. The Ashby House Young Riders title went to 18 year old Dani Samuel from Shrewsbury.

The tough Level 4 class, including a 45 kilometre orienteering course, saw a shake up of the form book, with Cumbrian rider Mike Myers taking his first championship title on his imposing gelding Dark Legend, also scooping The Hardy Souls Award for outstanding achievement for his improved orienteering performance.

Wynnstay Farmers Team Challenge victors were 'Treccing Tykes' comprising Elaine Greenwood, Carolyn Hird-Rogers and Dave and Sheila Rogerson.
