BHS President Noel Edmonds to visit Avon & Somerset
Police Stables
The British Horse Society (BHS) President, Noel Edmonds,
is to visit the Avon & Somerset Police Stables at Bower
Ashton near Bristol on Thursday 5th August, to celebrate a
new partnership between The British Horse Society and the
Avon & Somerset Police in horse and rider road safety.
The BHS has secured funding from the Police Community Trust
in Somerset & Avon, which will be used to provide free
fluorescent tabards to all candidates who apply to take their
BHS Riding & Road Safety Test in the Avon & Somerset
policing area. The BHS Riding & Road Safety test trains
and examines riders on how to safely ride on the road, and
has seen over 100,000 candidates through the exam to date.
Sheila Hardy, BHS Head of Safety, said “It is wonderful
to have been granted this money from the Avon and Somerset
Police Community Trust. It is very important that horse riders
wear high visibility gear, and on todays busy roads it has
been proven to give motorists an extra three seconds reaction
time in which to slow down.
The day will provide Mr Edmonds with a chance to visit the
stables from which he became the custodian of one of their
most famous police horses on retirement from the force. Avon,
during his career, won many competitions and awards and took
part in the notorious St Paul’s riot. After his retirement
at The Horse of the Year Show, Avon went to live with Noel
and taught him to ride for the very first time.
