Alexandra flies the flag for Belgium at BHS TREC English
Championships
The BHS TREC English Championships at Plumpton College, East
Sussex on 17-18 July had a truly international flavour, with
overseas competitors mounting a strong challenge to the home
team, and young Belgian rider Alexandra Noel scooping the
premier Level 4 title ahead of the British riders, in the
class sponsored by South East TREC Group.
Doing their best to see off the challenge from across the
Channel, Deborah Swan (Henley’s Rocket) from Hampshire
finished second at Level 4, just one point ahead of Jane Willett
(Italian Dancer) from the Wirral. Both these riders are short-listed
to represent Great Britain at the World TREC Championships
where the British team will be able to renew rivalry with
the victor.
South East based riders took the prizes at Level 2, the Performance
Equestrian Level 2 title going to Joy Taylor from Edgeley
in Surrey riding Ross Poldark, with a real battle behind her
between defending English Champion Alex Pyper from Leicestershire
on her young horse Walter Gabriel and Suzette Burchell (Sittingbourne,
Kent) riding Willow.
Northern raiders Ian Macalindin (Belper, Derbyshire) and
Nigel Robinson (York) continued their good form with a win
in the Level 3 Pairs class, having been in the top three at
all this year’s Championship events. An impressive performance
on day two, in Control of Gaits and PTV (obstacle course)
saw ‘Blind Date’ Greg Simpson-Horn and Jane Anscombe
leap up the order to finish runners-up, with recent Scottish
Champions ‘The Soul Survivors’ Sarah Thurnell
(Chesterfield, Derbyshire) and Sarah Constantine (Grantham,
Lincolnshire) third.
SE TREC Group Level 3 Individual went to Sheila Roberts from
Skipton in North Yorkshire, also winning the South East TREC
Group sponsored prize for the best veteran, on her 24-Year-old
Welsh x Arab mare Hannah. Prevented from a clean sweep of
Championship titles was Scottish and Welsh victor Sue Perks
from Kinver in the West Midlands who had to settle for second
with Phil Weaver from Wales third. 19-year-old Alex Wells
from Newark in Nottinghamshire won the Ashby House Young Riders
title.
The Lillico Attlee Team Challenge went to Uckfiled and District
Riding Club.
The British Horse Society (BHS) would like to thank the organisers,
competitors, sponsors and volunteers for making the event
such a success. BHS Head of Competitions, Rob Jones, said
“The BHS TREC English Championships have been a been
a great event. Riders have travelled not only from across
the UK, but from France Switzerland and the USA. It is encouraging
to see some of the riders short listed for the British team
at the World TREC Championships, 10th-12th September, putting
in strong performances.”
