Haslam takes a double home win for HM Plant Honda!

Leon Haslam took a magnificent double win for HM Plant Honda at their home circuit of Cadwell Park today. The 25-year-old rider from Derbyshire faced a tough battle with Suzuki’s Tom Sykes, but was able to record his third back-to-back win of the season. Sadly things didn’t go so well for Haslam’s team-mate Cal Crutchlow. The 22-year-old from Coventry was looking competitive all weekend and qualified in second on the grid, but chatter problems from his HM Plant Honda plagued him in race one where he finished in fifth place and a crash at Hall Bends in the second race saw him re-join way down the order before battling back to 13th at the flag. Today’s results see Leon climb to third in the Bennetts British Superbike championship with Cal dropping from second to fourth overall. In the Metzeler National Superstock 1000 race, Steve Brogan took his seventh win from nine starts to need just five points from the remaining three rounds to take the title. In Supersport, Steve finished in 11th position and stays in fifth overall in the championship.

RACE ONE: 1st position
RACE TWO: 1st position
“It’s fantastic to do the first double of the year for HM Plant Honda and this is for them and all their hard work. It was a tough weekend and we didn’t make the best start to it with a crash and fourth in qualifying but I felt we could be consistent in the race. In race one, I was comfortable following Tom Sykes and watching where he was quicker and trying to match him, then when I went past I didn’t push too hard, but got my head down on the last lap as I didn’t know Tom made a mistake and that left me with a gap which I held to the flag. In the second it was a shame that Cal went down, but it’s great to finally do a double and get three wins in a row for the team.”

RACE ONE: 5th position
RACE TWO: 13th position
“In race one I was confident that I could stay with the boys but the bike had so much chatter. In the first corner it was fine, but the bike was chattering everywhere else, it was a real problem. On the throttle it was fine, but when you came off it, the problem occurred, I couldn’t work it out. In the second race I was comfortable behind Tom and feeling confident but I clipped the kerb and down I went. I got back on and worked hard for 13th, but I'm very disappointed. I just have to dig deep and look forward now to Croft."

British Supersport – HM Plant Honda CBR600RR
11th position
British Superstock – Honda (UK) Racing CBR1000RR Fireblade
1st position
“Winning the race on the Superstock Fireblade was a good end to the day after a frustrating weekend really. Riding both bikes has been very physically demanding. In Supersport I rode as hard as I could and only managed 11th which is disappointing, as the boys had worked so hard on the HM Plant Honda CBR600RR. So, when I got onto the Superstock CBR1000RR I really took out my aggression out on it and it performed faultlessly! I was very pleased to take the lap record on the lap after the pace car went in, but it seems I can’t seem to shake Jon Kirkham off, can I? He was second again so we’ll have to do our best next time out at Croft.”

Havier Beltran – HM Plant Honda team manager
“What a great result for Leon and the team. This is our first double at our home track and obviously the first double of the year for us. It's a shame for Cal: he had chatter at the rear-end in the first race and then caught the engine cases on the kerbs in the second. He tweaked his knee a little in the crash, but is otherwise OK. He did well to come back from 24th to 13th at the flag. For Steve it's another great result in Superstock. He needs something like just five points to take the title in the remaining three rounds. Sadly it's just not happening for him on the HM Plant CBR600RR in Supersport, but we know he's capable of the results."
