Women's European Championships in Clermont Ferrant (FRA) - Preview

City of Liverpool's Melanie Roberts, Hannah Clowes and Hannah Whelan swept the top three positions in the first Control competition for the up and coming Women's European Championships in Clermont Ferrant (FRA), 3-6 April 2008.
Roberts and Clowes both topped the scoring with 53.450, followed by Whelan, with 53.150.

Positions four to nine in the Control, held at the Lilleshall N.S.Centre on Wednesday, 27 February, were taken by Kayleigh Cooke (Huntingdon), Marissa King (Huntingdon), Rebecca Wing (Heathrow), Hannah Freeman (Sapphire), Emma White (Huntingdon) and Rebecca Downie (Nottingham), who performed only on Bars, but scored the highest score of 14.150 All of these gymnasts will compete in the Friendly International vs. Czech Republic on Saturday and Sunday, 1- 2 March at the Lilleshall N.S.C., which will also see two top Individuals from Israel.

The weekend's event will serve as the second European Control for the British squad, with the third, and last being scheduled for 15-16 March, at the International versus France, in Blackpool.
All the guests arrived in Britain on Monday, 25 February, and are training together with the British gymnasts.

The Czech's line-up includes the 2007 World Championships gymnasts Jana Sikulova, Kristyna Palesova, Nicole Pechancova, Eva Verbova and the newcomer Veronika Ozanova. The most popular gymnast of the country in the recent years and one of the best vaulters in the world, Jana Komrskova has retired after the World Championships in Stuttgart, in September. Both the Israeli gymnasts, Tali Liak and Vered Finkel, also competed in Stuttgart.

"This visit has been organised in the spirit of our long years friendly collaboration and as the initial stage of our preparation for the two key international events in 2008 - the European Championships in Clermont Ferrant (FRA) 3-6 April, and the Olympic Games in Beijing, in August", said BG Women's Artistic Gymnastics Technical Director Adrian Stan.
The competition on Saturday which will see the Team and the Individual All-around events begins at 3:00 pm and the Individual Apparatus Finals on Sunday start at 1:00pm.
