Tenth Year of Gymnastics Fiestas in Glasgow

Top gymnasts from the leading gymnastics nations of China, Japan, Romania and Russia and a record 29 countries represented. The possibility to see in the flesh the British stars Beth Tweddle, 2006 World and European Champion on A. Bars, Louis Smith, 2007 World Bronze medallist and Daniel Keatings, 2007 European Silver medallist on Pommels.

All this and a lot more, which only “the cream of the cream” of World gymnastics can offer, can be witnessed in the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow on Friday and Saturday, 9/10 November 2007.

Twenty of the male gymnasts who won medals, or reached the Finals in the last years’ edition, are coming back to Scotland - a convincing proof of respect and continuity for this great competition.

Some of the brightest names in the gymnastics constellation:

On the Men’s side: Mitja Petkovsek (SLO), twice World Champion on P. Bars (2005 and 2007), Lou Bin (CHN), 2002 and 2004 World Cup Final Vault champion, Aljaz Pegan (SLO), 2005 World Champion on High Bar, Yuri Van Gelder (NED), 2005 World Champion on Rings; Evgeni Sapronenko (LAT), 2004 Olympic Silver medallist on Vault, Krisztian Berki (HUN), twice European Champion on Pommels (2005 and 2007), Silver medallist in the World Championships 2007, Regulo Carmona (VEN)- 2006 World Cup Final Champion on Rings, Euchi Sekiguchi and Takehito Mori (JPN), 2006 World Team Bronze medallists, to name but of a few.

On the Women’s side: Steliana Nistor (ROM), 2007 World Silver medallist All-around and Beam; Daria Zgoba (UKR), 2007 European Champion on A.Bars, Zhang Nang (CHN), 2004 Olympic and 2003 World All-around medallist, along her team mates Fan Ye, 2003 World Champion on Beam and Zhou Zhuoru, 2007 World Student Team Champion; the gymnast who wrote history for Canada by winning the first ever world medal for her country (bronze on Beam in 2006), Elyse Hopfner- Hibbs (CAN), the 2006 World Team Silver medallist from the USA Natasha Kelly; multiple World Cup events winner/medallist on Vault Jana Sikulova (CZE).

Great Britain will be represented by three gymnasts from Huntingdon Gym Club: Daniel Keatings, Louis Smith and Luke Folwell, two gymnasts from Leeds: Adam Cox (originally from Edinborough!) and Stephen Jehu, and Kristian Thomas from Earls Gymnastics, Wolverhampton.

On the women’s side, two gymnasts from Liverpool, the seven-time British Champion Beth Tweddle and Hannah Clowes and two gymnasts from Huntingdon G.C, Marissa King and Kayleigh Cooke. Beth, Hannah and Marissa were members of the 2007 World Squad in Stuttgart who reached the Team Final and finished in a record 7th position at the beginning of September, while Kayleigh, the youngest, was reserve to the squad.

Launched exactly ten years ago, in 1997, the Glasgow Grand Prix quickly won its place as one of the most attractive gymnastics events worldwide and since 1999 won the status of a FIG World Cup event.

The competition consists of Apparatus Qualifications on Friday, 9/11 and Apparatus Finals on Saturday, 10/11. It is a Category A event and based on the ongoing 2007/2008 World Cup Rules of the FIG. The Finals on Saturday, 10 November will be filmed and shown on BBC TV.
