Double British Success in Orlando!
The President of British Gymnastics, Brian Stocks, was elected
as Vice President of the FIG Disciplinary Commission at the
FIG Council Meeting in Orlando (USA), on Saturday 19th May
2007.
The next day, Sunday, 20th May, saw Birmingham with a winning
the bid to stage the 2011 World Championships in Trampoline,
Tumbling and Double-Mini Trampoline. These Championships will
be of crucial importance particularly for the Trampoline,
since they will serve also as 2012 Qualifications.
The event will be held over three days at the Birmingham’s
National Indoor Arena (NIA) where around 650 athletes from
40 countries will compete. This will include not only the
world’s best gymnasts but also youngsters from across
the globe as the Championships include Age group competitions
as well as senior events.
British Gymnastics and Birmingham City Council have formed
a successful partnership in recent years by jointly staging
the World Cup Finals in Artistic Gymnastics in 2004 and in
Trampoline and Tumbling in 2006.
Alan Sommerville, Chief Executive for British Gymnastics
said:
“This event will be staged less than year before 2012
which will not only provide an excellent showcase for the
sport of Trampoline but also provide our British team with
a fantastic opportunity to experience the excitement and pressure
associated with competing in a major event on home soil.”
The bid has been strongly supported by UK Sport, who will
be one of the major funding partners for the Championships,
through their National Lottery funded World Class Events Programme.
