British Tumblers leave their mark at the World Cup in Sofia
Current British Tumbling Champion Laura Houson (Wakefield
G.C.) won a significant, first ever World Cup victory in her
career, at the renowned tournament named after the astronaut
Alexander Alexandrov, held at the Bulgarian capital Sofia,
on 22/23rd June 2007. Laura’s overall score was 66.60pts.
The Silver medal went to the 2006 World Cup Final Bronze
medalist Anna Terenia (BLR), 65.90 pts, and the Bronze, to
Samantha Palmer (Lynx G.C.), the British 2006 European Champion
and World Cup Final winner (65.20 pts).
“For Laura to win this competition was fantastic,
especially when she became Junior European Champion in 2004
at the same venue and the same track. Great experience for
her, which will be very beneficial for the World Championships
in Quebec (CAN) in November! I am also very happy to see Sam
Palmer on the road to recovery having made the Podium once
again in Sofia”, said British National Coach in Tumbling
Craig Lawther.
The Chinese Wang Jiexu won the Men’s Tumbling (CHN),
79.10 pts, followed by his young teammate Li Zhenqiu (CHN),
75.40 pts. (Silver) and Jozef Wadecki (POL), 74.20 pts. (Bronze).
The British Charlie Burrows (GBR) from Pinewood G.C. took
the 4th place, 71.50 pts, just beating the current European
Champion Tagir Murtazaev (RUS), 71.40 pts, (fifth)
Following a mistake in the preliminaries the other British
tumbler in Sofia, Michael Barnes (GBR), Wakefield G.C., finished
just outside the Finals, 9th place.
Sofia will be also remembered with the five World Records
achieved during the competition:
· Trampoline- Individual Women- He Wenna (CHN)- highest
scoring first routine (30.80 pts)
· Trampoline - Synchro Men- Ueyama-Sotomura (JPN),
highest scoring first routine in Synchro (40.40 pts)
· Trampoline - Synchro Men- Ueyama-Sotomura (JPN),
highest difficulty in Synchro (16.20 pts),
· Tumbling - Wang Jiexu (CHN)- highest scoring pass
(40.60 pts.)
· Tumbling- Wang Jiexu- highest difficulty in one pass
(14.50 pts).
Irina Karavaeva (RUS) and Yuri Nikitin (UKR) took the gold
medals in individual trampoline while Yulia Domchevska-Elena
Movchan (UKR) and Yasuhiro Ueyama-Tetsuya Sotomura (JPN) were
the best in the Synchro events for Women and Men respectively.
British competitors did not take part in the Trampoline section
of the competition in Sofia, which involved an overall of
120 athletes from 18 countries. It was the fourth World Cup
series event since the beginning of 2007 (following Lake Placid
(USA), Quebec (CAN) and Kunshan City (CHN), and will be followed
by the events in Ostend, Belgium (end of June) and St Petersburg,
Russia (August).
