British and Brazilian women gear up for the Worlds

Just a week before they depart for Stuttgart, Germany, where the 2007 World Championships and 2008 Olympic Qualifications in Artistic Gymnastics will take place, two of the quickest progressing nations in the world, Great Britain and Brazil, are getting together in Ipswich for a friendly meeting at the Pipers Vale Gymnastics Centre on 18th and 19th August 2007.

Last year, both teams went successfully through the first round of the Olympic 2008 Qualifications, Brazil finishing in 7th and GBR in 11th place at the World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. However, the second round in Stuttgart (GER), 1-9 September, is THE one to secure Olympic visas for only the top 12 out of the 24 teams who have already passed the first test in Aarhus.

Thus, the British Women’s Technical Director, Adrian Stan, and the Brazilian Head Coach Oleg Ostapenko, will call their best gymnasts for a final check-up of their competitive form and readiness to fight for prestige in Stuttgart.

Beth TweddleThe guests will be led by their most experienced gymnast, the twice Olympian Daniele Hypolito, who, in 2001, in Ghent, made history for Brazil by winning the first world medal for the country, silver on floor. Lais Souza, who reached two World Finals in 2006 (vault-4th and floor –8th), recently confirmed her class at the Pan American Games, by winning two bronze medals (vault and bars). Jade Barbosa , the new Pan American champion on vault and medallist from the World cup events in Cottbus and Paris this year, seems to be Brazil’s new prodigy. Still less known in Europe, but potentially capable to deliver world-class gymnastics are the other three members of the team Ana Claúdia Silva, Khiuani Dias and Ethiene Franco. The best of all the Brazilians at the moment, the 2003 World Champion and 2004 World Cup winner on floor Daiane Dos Santos will not be travelling to Ipswich.

The British line up will be announced on the eve of the meet (Friday, 17/08), but it expected that all the key players of the National Team will perform on Saturday, 18/08 (Team and All-around event from 15:00 to 17:00 hour) and on Sunday, 19/08 (Apparatus Finals from 13:00 to 15:30)
