2nd EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
MEN’S & WOMEN’S ARTISTIC
AMSTERDAM
22-30 APRIL 2007
The British Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics
Teams have travelled to Amsterdam (HOL) for the 2nd European
Individual Artistic Gymnastics Championships 26th-29th April.
Britain’s World beating gymnast Beth Tweddle returns
to competitive action after an injury break, ready to return
to medal winning action. The nine strong Women’s and
Men’s GBR teams will compete amongst 41 different federations
in front of over 6,000 gymnastics fans at the Amsterdam Exhibition
Centre RAI.
The GBR Teams have their sights firmly set on medals with
Tweddle and Male gymnast Louis Smith perhaps the most likely
to finish on the podium. For Tweddle, the return to International
action after a hugely successful 2006, during which she became
Britain's first ever Artistic World Champion in Aarhus (DEN)
and won the highly coveted World Cup Final in Sao Paulo (BRA),
marks a new step in her bid for Olympic glory in Beijing next
year. A shoulder operation has ruled her out of defending
her European title on her favourite apparatus the Asymmetric
Bars, but she will still be looking for success on the Floor
and Beam.
Rising Men’s start Louis Smith also had a 2006 to remember
as he took Commonwealth and Junior European titles as well
as travelling with Beth to the World Cup Finals in Brazil.
For Louis, the Pommel Horse apparatus is where he is at home
and where he is expected to feature amongst the medals.
The qualification competition begins on Thursday April 25th
with gymnasts looking to make the Individual all-around final
on Saturday and Individual apparatus finals on Sunday.
