World Championships Day 4 - Women's Qualification
17th October 2006 Day 4 (Morning)
British team was up and down by 7.15am. As the well rehearsed
preparation goes into place, no rush just controlled calm,
breakfast, taxi and training everything to plan no unnecessary
stress the approach to the competition must not have extraneous
factors introduced which can interfere with the final preparation.
The National coaches and personal coaches know the drill nothing
is said, the anticipation of what is to come is focused on
their minds.
I arrive in the hall at 9.00am Adrian Stan is already there,
pen and bible in hand the analysis begins with the march in
of the first round gymnasts: Belarus, Korea. Ireland and Russia.
As we get to the later gymnasts in the round traditionally
the strongest performers the shape changes P Miller RUS has
a look of the Russian greats
At the end of the first competition Russia are now in 2nd
place
1st United States
2nd Russia
3rd Romania
10.30 am and Great Britain arrives in the arena some isolated
screams around the arena but mainly from the GBR delegation.
Paul Hall has just arrived and says he’s enjoying reading
the reports on the Web and a little unkindly suggested I need
Jeff Davis back. You can’t please all the people all
the time but if you have any comment e.mail Brian.stocks@vodafone.net

Leigh Rogers
Wobbly but she went through all you can ask being up first
Score 13.625 “A” 5.2
Beth is now sat on the floor just having warmed up on Beam
holding her ankle physio and doctor come round and start strapping
and tapping furiously
Olivia Bryl
Beam her routine is slow deliberate she land the 2 1/2 twist
dismount. The judges are on the phone they obviously don’t
agree.
Score 13.75 “A” score5.3
Aisling Williams
Corina is at the podium as the delay seems to go on for ages.
Ash mounts first two skills including side somersault are
good, leap did not join, good piked back slight wobble on
1 1/2 spin she missed the jump series and then remodels the
routine to get extra jump series the whistle goes, there be
a time penalty it was a very good routine.
Score 14.475 “A” Score 5.8
Lynette Lisle
Side somersault, illusion spin not round and low she will
only get 1/2 front back somersault combination leg waved to
the side for balance the whistle goes its 1.21 she land. Nice
elegant lines says Meg comments: “a little bit hesitant”.
Score 13.95 “A” Score5.3
Beth Tweddle
Beth Mounts the podium it’s the scary bit now will her
foot injury hold her back. Why does take so long to get the
score Beth is stood motionless, Wobble on front somersault
start wobble on full spin front into Korbut combination jumps
with what seemed a pause Piked front, 2 1/2 slight step to
the side, stayed on.
Score 14.80 “A” 6.1
Well done BG we can relax again!
“This is the first International that Leigh Rodgers
have ever done and being first up on Beam is tremendous pressure.”
says Michelle Waldock - coach
I wonder what her teams mate think back home?
Round 2
GBR could not have done any better than that!
People keep wandering by the back of the seats saying “Good
Luck”
A Great Britain flag is now hanging over the barrier by Floor.
The rest of the GBR contingent are sat just behind the large
Cannon advert flags are now appearing around the arena I would
like to say its a sea of flags but its more like a large puddle
what they lack in size they make up for in noise an enthusiasm.
Beth is now taking the strapping off her foot for Bars, John
Aldridge (Doctor) has already prepared the strapping for Beam,
such is the pace of the work.
We are currently 9th we need to improve by one place to make
a final, Fingers crossed.
GBR A. Bars
The team stand around the chalk box half preparing, half watching
the performances of their team-mates.
Leigh Rodgers
Legs slightly apart and lack of extended feet but that’s
being hyper critical, great start and its always tough going
first the arena seems to take the air away. Technical scrutiny
takes place between expert and novice but its only the judges
who knows.
Score 12.775 “A” 4.8
Olivia Bryl
She’s tall and every parting of the legs stands out
and gets screams from the GBR team she lands well another
one through we breathe again Lyn Fairbrother is trying to
stay calm.
Score 13.35 “A” 5.6
Aisling Williams
Great start it looks good. Full-in back out to stick still
great cheer from the bench.
Score 13.95 “A” 5.5. (she may have a lost bonus)
Lynette Lisle
Great routine and then on the 2 1/2 dismount she hits the
floor and fall backwards to the side missing the landing mat
and seems to land on back and elbows she is quickly up.
Score 14.025 “A” Score 6.3
Beth Tweddle
Go Beth Go Beth is the shout the couple in front think we
are mad. I can hardly watch slight hand grasp and readjust
on the bar hyper extended in one handstand draws a gasp from
our head of delegation now the landing its seems that the
floor comes up to meet her and she bounces around a little
on landing its good but how good
Score 15.675 “A” score 6.9
We now have 112.900. We are currently ranked 11th behind
Japan
We need to be in the top 24 Adrian Stan grunts “it
could be better but it could be a lot worse.”
Last round of the competition and as you would expect China
are nipping at the heals of USA there is 2.8 difference at
the moment with A. Bars to go the Chinese have routines loaded
with difficulty so once again we are left unsure of the result
at this time. “The Ukrainians’ are lovely”
says Meg Warren “their choreography is better than China,
the Chinese gymnasts have lovely lines.”
But our attention must go to Bars as the distinctive white
yellow and red tracksuits of China mount the podium to prepare
the apparatus. There is a Chinese gymnast with a start score
of 7.4 (Beth start score is 6.9)
He N
Score 14.775 “A” Score 6.1
The whole of the arena is watching China on Bars the noise
has quietened as people watch with mouths open unable to comprehend
what they see.
Zhou Z
Score 15.150 “A” Score 6.3
Li Y
Three mistakes and then a fall in top change full twist
Score 14.45 “A” Score 6.8
Pang P
This is one of their weaker team members buried in the team
trying to get a technical advantage. The crowd feel cheated
Score 15.125 “A” Score 6.4

The Team score 226.575 we are ahead of Japan and we have
beaten Canada
We have finished 9th at the moment likely to finish 11th as
there is China and Ukraine still to go.
Meg Warren comment: “The British Choreography was brilliant!”
We are so please for the team it was a good performance almost
reminiscent of Anaheim. "We looked well prepared,"
says Ann Tweddle (Beth’s mother). The coaches have big
smiles as they walk passed our seats every body is happy TOP
