Louis wins Bronze in the company of Champions
Louis Smith (17) from Huntingdon Gym Club took the Bronze
medal on Pommel Horse at the renowned DTB Cup International
in Stuttgart , Germany (also a World Cup Qualifier), on Saturday,
28 October 2006.
The Gold went to Krisztian Berki (HUN), 2005 European Champion
on this apparatus and a winner in a number of World Cup events
over the season 2005/2006.
Nikolay Krukov (RUS), 1999 World Around Champion and many
times Olympic, World and European medallist or Finalist on
Pommels, won the Silver in Stuttgart.
Louis Smith is the 2006 Commonwealth Games Champion and twice
Junior European Champion on Pommels.
Unfortunately, he was unable to take part at the recent World
Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, because of an injured finger.
The competition in Stuttgart was vital for a number of the
best Apparatus specialists in the world (both Men & Women),
since they are trying to put together enough points for the
World Ranking Lists, so that they could qualify for the World
Cup Final in Brazil, mid December.
Only the top 8 gymnasts on every piece of apparatus will
compete in the Final.
Their last chance will be at the Glasgow Grand Prix and World
Cup, at the Kelvin Hall, on 10/11 November 2006.
Last year Louis Smith won his first medal (Bronze) at this
prestigious event and this year he will compete again along
with David Eaton, Sam Hunter, Adam Cox, Daniel Keatings.
The 2006 World and European Champion on A. Bars, Beth Tweddle,
will be also competing in Glasgow together with Aisling Williams,
Lynette Lisle.
