British Men’s Championships 2006

Robin Park Arena, Wigan

Day One

A fantastic first day of competition at Wigan’s, Robin Park Arena saw Ross Brewer (Sutton GC) crowned the Men’s British Champion, with Louis Smith (Huntingdon GC) declared Under-18 Champion and Daniel Purvis (Southport YMCA) Under-16 Champion.

Men’s National Coach, Andre Popov said: “It has been a brilliant day, with so many great routines and a lot of hard work put in. I was particularly pleased to see Louis Smith again performing well on the Pommel Horse, the apparatus that he can really perform well at”

Senior Champion for the fourth year running, Ross Brewer said: “ I went out today and did my best and was really pleased to win it. Although today was the main event for me I still feel confident going into tomorrows apparatus competition. There have been some great, talented young gymnasts seen today which shows good signs for the future.”

Under-18 star Louis Smith said: “ I felt a bit shaky early on but have been training really hard for a long time for this event and am really happy I pulled it off and delighted with my performance. It feels good that I have worked hard and am glad I proved it today.”

Ross won his 4th consecutive British Title with a winning score of 87.950 with David Eaton (Hinckley) and Luke Folwell (Huntingdon GC) following behind. In second and third place behind Louis (85.650 points) in the Under-18 all-around, came Kristian Thomas (Earls) and Sam Hunter (Nottingham)
