11th International Junior Team Cup 2006

The '11th International Junior Team Cup' (also popular as the OBI Cup) held over the last weekend in Berlin (GER), drawing particular attention in view of the approaching European Junior Championships in Volos (Greece), in May 2006.

In a very strong field including 20 Junior Teams from 17 countries of 4 different continents, the British boys achieved excellent results, in spite of the fact that, together with Australia, they were the youngest competitors in Berlin.

They took the 9th place in the Team event with a total of 234.40 pts. As expected, Japan won the Gold medals (255.40), followed by KTV Chemniz, Germany (245.25), Silver and Switzerland (244.6), the Bronze. Spain was fourth, Berlin (GER) fifth and Belarus sixth.

All the British gymnasts, apart from Nathan Jones (Dynamo), who had to replace the injured Sam Hunter, come from the Nottingham School of Gymnastics and are coached by Barry Winch.

Under 14:
Reece Pearson competed on all six pieces winning the overall Title (83.75). He was best on Floor (13.60), P. Horse (14.85), Rings (13.80), P. Bars (13.80) and H. Bar (13.20) and fourth on Vault (14.50).

Sam Oldham competed on Rings, Floor and Vault, coming second on Rings (13.25) and Floor (13.20), and second on Vault (15.05).

15/16 years:
Lukas Fischer from Switzerland won the individual All-around ranking (80.80) with Andrew Smith taking the 20th position (35.35). He did only 3 apparatus for the team competition and was third on P. Horse (13.85).

17/18 years
Sergio Munoz from Spain took the All-around Gold medal with the remarkable score of 85.00. Nathan Jones (Dynamo) was 15th (73.45).

'I am delighted with these results'. said the National Coach Andre Popov. 'Had we taken part with our Junior National Team, we could have finish this event on the Team rostrum. Considering the fact that these are our 2008 and 2012 Olympic hopefuls, this is indeed a very inspiring result'.
